GREY'S ANATOMY - Yesterday

I decided to started reviewing Grey's back to Yesterday because well, thats when it started pissing me off. Up until then, bomb episodes included, my tagline was "FRIENDS better be damn glad Grey's falls in a different genre or it'd have competition". Now...well...the reviews might stop at the end of the season if this show doesn't clean up its act.

This episode stayed with the usual quality up until the last three minutes, so let's stay positive for a while. The first part of the show had me rolling on the ground. Seriously...one of the funniest 15 minutes in the history of Grey's. Burke and Cristina dancing was priceless and there were so many quotable lines, including:

Ellis: I'm exhausted.
Meredith: Me too.
Ellis: I was going at it in the on-call room all night, what's your excuse?

Cristina: What's wrong with you?
Meredith: My mommy's a filthy whore.

Addison: ...until Derek found us in bed together.
Webber: You put your weight behind it?
Derek: Yes, sir.
Webber: Well alright then.

George: Why is he suturing his own face?
Cristina: To turn me on.

Cristina: McSexy?
Meredith: No?
Izzy: McYummy!
Cristina: No...
Meredith: No...McSteamy.
Cristina: There it is.
George: I'm just choking back some McVomit...

Cristina: Does anyone get what McDreamy and McSteamy see in her?
Alex: She's McHott.
George: McYeah she is.

Okay...back to the storyline. Other than the hilarity that Mark being there caused and how hot he was...him showing up was a little out of the blue and random. At the time, I didn't see this as a big deal, but now that all storylines have gone downhill, this just sticks out in my mind more. Just why then? That wasn't explained at all. There was never any indication of phone calls or contact, he just showed up. And after all that pain being drudged up for Derek, he's the one that admitted that he was absent and a little to blame. After this, I don't understand fans who don't like him. Being absent and neglectful as a doctor is an occupational hazard. Addison's a doctor, so she of all people should understand that. a) The fact that doctors have a hard time having lives was addressed in a storyline of Izzy's last season and b) at the beginning of this season, Addison admitted that they were BOTH absent and lazy in their marriage. And yet SHE was the only one that cheated. Cheating isn't an option or something that can be explained away by your spouse's mistakes in a marriage.

I guess I need to go ahead and throw out there that I'm a huge Meredith fan and I'll acknowledge that I know I'm in the minority there. Her going to see her father was heartbreaking I thought, but how can you blame a guy who was married to that wretch of a woman Ellis? Still, he shouldn't have left Meredith just because he left Ellis. I still thought this was one more thing, like Mark, that was contrived for the big bang. Yuck.

The banter between Mark and Meredith was really funny, but I think their ignoring a huge plot for contrivance here. The whole "slutty mistresses" back and forth was funny, yes, but categorically untrue. Mark = mistress, Meredith = not so much. Derek didn't start anything with her until after he was separated from Addison. Was he dating Meredith while he was still married? Yes, so in the most literal sense of the word, I guess you could call her a mistress, but slutty mistress, not so much. Ignoring entire plot points for the sake of catchy one-liners? Not my idea of well written TV.

I have to say...it completely and totally pisses me off that Addison stayed with Mark when Derek went to Seattle. Normally, this would be a good thing because eventually it would come out and be a reason for Derek to leave the redheaded whore (not to be confused with my redheaded love, Michelle Stafford), but for some reason, it just doesn't sit with me. I don't like it that she did that. Plus, there are two other factors here. Shonda Rhimes constantly reminds fans in her blogs that nothing NOTHING that happens doesn't happen for a reason or come back eventually and have impact and meaning. So if you go by that, that "karma" that they are so fond of in Seattle will eventually come back to bite her. On the other hand...in the blog following 'Yesterday', the other writer, Krista Vernoff, I think, heavily implied, something to the effect of, 'wouldn't it be funny if that never came out?? like many things never come out in real life...'. You have GOT to be kidding me. If that crap never comes out, I'll **** * *****. I'm not even kidding. But...no matter how much that last statement makes me want to go to California and run KV down in my car (but not without making a pitstop to visit my MCSCP on the way...drinks all around!)...she's actually right. That crap does actually happen in real life. But seriously...does anyone else watch TV to escape real life?? I'm sorry...I thought thats what it was for. Bottom line...I hope Shonda's logic prevails on this one. It's starting to chap my ass that the Addison fanbase is growing.

Okay...Burktina. First of all...the dancing scene at the beginning was precious. Both of their dancing...styles? were adorable, and I'll actually side with Burke about the Cristina apartment thing. I think it was unreasonable of him to ask her to give up her apartment, she could have sublet her other one or something, but she definitely shouldn't have lied about it. And its a big deal for me to side with Burke on anything...he's not my favorite character, although these days, he's moving up in the world since George and Izzy are seriously outshining him for jackass and jackassette of the century. But he went back to good ol' dependable arrogant Burke at the end of the episode when he decided it was appropriate to chastise the woman he supposedly "loves" and list every single bad thing about her. Come on, Burke, do you honestly think she hasn't, at one time or another, had self doubt regarding all those things? Do you really think it helps to hear them from the one person that she cares about and trusts the most? Oh my gosh you are a jackass. Not only that, but talk about the pot calling the kettle black! Cristina's competitive? Cristina's competitive????? You've got to be kidding me. Walk in and say, I just want to love you so stop lying to me and shutting me out. That'll do it. No need to point out every flaw she has, half of which you share. Thanks.

Okay, now the moment I've been dreading...even writing about it is horrifying...and can I just say, that I knew that we were supposedly waiting for some sort of "big bang" in the last three minutes...and originally, before the episode started and we just knew about Mark, we all assumed it was Addie cheating again or something like that...but the second Izzy said you could try telling her how you feel...I knew. Yep...the last 30 minutes of the last good episode was ruined for me because I knew. I just had to wait for it. And it was just as creepy as I thought it would be. Just as creepy as George is everytime he talks about Meredith. I've never seen so many people standing up and yelling at the TV screaming NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO in my life. Except me. My head was buried in a pillow. I was in shock. And is it just me, or was there more, 'please tell me you didn't do this' feedback, than 'I can't believe this happened' feedback'? Possibly the biggest mistake in recent TV history. Oh yeah...I'm fully counting JJ's tragic 'missing two year' storyline, which I fully blame for both Alias' cancellation and mistreatment by ABC this season. (See any ALIAS post for that rant) TRAGIC. Fallout rants in next time in "What Did I Do To Deserve This?".
